Lance Bass Talks Impending Fatherhood: “I Never Thought This Moment Would Come”

Article by Leena Taylor for Romper

As he gets ready to become a first-time dad to twins, Lance Bass is reflecting on his journey from being “so closeted” while hiding his sexuality during his youth, to celebrating his identity and announcing his parenting news during Pride Month. Bass and his husband of six years, Michael Turchin, revealed they’re expecting twins in a fun, horror film-themed TikTok post.

“It’s perfect timing,” Bass recently told Romper at Bingo Under the Stars, where he joined forces with *NSYNC bandmate Joey Fatone and Backstreet Boys members Nick Carter and AJ McLean to debut their collaborative group “Back-Sync.” “It’s an added bonus to be pregnant right now, because Pride is all about celebrating our freedoms and for so long, our community didn’t feel like we could even have families. We were always told, ‘No.’”

Bass, who has previously shared how struggles with his sexuality caused depressionduring *NSYNC’s heyday, added that back in the nineties he could never have imagined the day would come when he would not only get to embrace and celebrate his identity publicly, but do so while starting a family.

“I never thought this moment would come,” he said. “Never. Back in the day, I was so closeted. I look at my interviews from when I was with *NSYNC and I feel like that wasn’t even me. I don’t sound the same, I don’t act the same. I was hiding my true self, but now I get to just be me and it’s the best feeling.”

Bass, 42, and Turchin’s road to parenthoodhas been fraught with challenges, including multiple attempts at surrogacy, IVF heartache and a miscarriage. The two reportedly went through nine egg donors and will welcome their twins via a surrogate later this year.

Having endured so many setbacks, the couple are thrilled to finally be able to enjoy preparations for their babies’ arrival. And, the postal service has their work cut out for them as a result: Bass notes that he and artist Turchin, 34, can’t keep up with opening all the packages that loved ones keep sending their way.

“We’ve been inundated with so much baby stuff already – everyday, 10 boxes show up with strollers, Pampers, you-name-it,” he says. “It’s insane. They’re not even here yet! It feels like my friends are more excited than we are.”

With just a few months to go, Bass has also been doing lots of reading. “I’ve been reading lots of books on how to make sure you can keep babies alive,” he laughs. “That’s important!”

Bass does have one advantage when it comes to raising his daughter — his extensive experience with *NSYNC fangirls around the globe over the last 20+ years. And he would be more than happy if his daughter became a fangirl someday.

“Being in a group like *NSYNC, I got to know women very well. Our market was 99% women,” he says. “If my girl turns out to be a really great fan, I would love that because we met some incredible ladies along the way. We have some of the best fans ever.”

The ongoing love and loyalty of those fans was rewarded with *NSYNC’s partial comeback via Back-Sync at The Grove in Los Angeles. The boy banders united for a performance and bingo night in celebration of Pride Month. The evening benefitted LA Pride and The Trevor Project, who were presented with a cryptocurrency check for $1 million in $TKINU tokens on behalf of the singers’ involvement with cryptocurrency project Mission Tsuki.

“It’s such an amazing organization saving so many lives out there,” Bass said on stage about The Trevor Project, which provides support to LGBTQ youth. “If you need someone to talk to, give them a call – even anonymously. That’s what they’re there for.”

Backstreet Boys, *NSYNC, Boyz II Men Members Team for ‘The After Party’ Las Vegas Engagement

AJ, Wayna, Nick & Joey

*NSYNC’s Joey Fatone, Backstreet Boysmembers AJ McLean and Nick Carter and Boyz II Men’s Wanya Morris are teaming up for a nostalgic four-night engagement at The Venetian Resort Las Vegas in August.

The musicians will unite in the intimate Sands Showroom for “The After Party,” an interactive show which will see the crooners perform each other’s hits with a live band, rock their loved choreography, explore other genres, bring in surprise guests and share untold stories from their time on the road.

“We wanted to do something with the idea of the Rat Pack meets the Pop age now — different artists coming together and doing a show that’s fun, but also takes you through a bit of history,” Fatone, 44, tells Variety. “But it organically also turned into more of a celebration of our bands and a homage to pop culture.”

“You’re going to see these guys and these groups in a light you’ve never seen them in before,” Fatone adds.

The news comes just weeks after McLean, Carter, Fatone and his bandmate Lance Bass hit the stage at The Grove in Los Angeles to debut their collaborative group “Back-Sync.” Earlier in June, McLean also teamed up with *NSYNC’s Chris Kirkpatrick and 98 Degrees’ Jeff Timmons for a Las Vegas fundraiser benefiting the Victoria’s Voice Foundation.

Fatone says “The After Party” was in the works well before Back-Sync, partly inspired by his “Joey Fatone and Friends” concerts at the 2019 Epcot International Food and Wine Festival. The shows saw him perform alongside musicians including Kirkpatrick, Ryan Cabrera and Boyz II Men’s Nathan Morris.

Both Fatone and Carter were further inspired after competing on “The Masked Singer.” “It was so fun doing songs and covers, we thought, ‘Why not integrate that into something we can do with a show?’” Fatone says, noting that all four musicians have also competed on “Dancing With the Stars.” “We’re getting our setlist together right now and coming up with a lot of crazy, interesting ideas.”

“We’ve had so much fun putting this show together,” adds McLean. “I can’t wait to share it with the fans. I promise an incredible night of wild surprises.”

New Soundfly Course on Boybands

Hi *NSYNC fans! We wanted to share some cool new *NSYNC related content with all of you.

Soundfly, an online music education hub that creates unique and highly-effective online music courses in a variety of subjects has created one about our favorite subject — boybands. It is called The Music of Boybands. It explores this pseudo-genre of music from analytical and practical angles and empowers aspiring songwriters, producers, and ultimate fans alike, with some of the foundational tools for creating songs in this hodge podge of pop-oriented styles. The course includes heavy breakdowns of *NSYNC hits as well as songs by other artists throughout the era of boy bands, including Backstreet Boys, New Kids on the Block, BTS, the Jonas Brothers, and more. The course is also a celebration of the hybrid experience of taking music seriously and embracing the overwhelming fun in it.

I will be taking this course next week and give you all my full review, but in the mean time I wanted to share the course trailer and some exclusive content!

Soundfly’s Trailer for The Music of Boy Bands.

Check it out and let me know your thoughts! I look forward to hearing if you take part in this awesome course.

When Richard Marx Met *NSYNC

As they were the aforementioned biggest band in the country, I jumped at the chance to work with them, and it was one of the most pleasurable experiences I’ve ever had in my career. All five of the guys were gracious, focused, and kind.

But one thing that was immediately obvious was the incredible talent in Justin. It was clear even then that he was going to be a megastar the likes of which we rarely see. He had a fire in his belly that would not be tamed. He was constantly working on song ideas, arrangement ideas, vocal parts. It was really inspiring to even me, who’d been in the business fifteen years at that point and worked with all levels of talented and creative people. Everyone around him knew he was something special.

Making records is a blast for me, but for some it can be tedious work. There would be chunks of time while I was recording with one of the guys in the group and the other four guys would have that time to kill. Video games were already huge, and the lounge in the studio outside the control room had been outfitted with a big-screen TV and a video game console, where the guys would play against each other during their recording breaks. Not Justin, though. Instead of playing, any time he wasn’t needed to record something, he would ask me, “How long ’til you need me again?”
