Billboard: *NSYNC Reunite for ‘Trolls Band Together’ Song ‘Better Place’: See the Release Date & New Trailer

After decades of fans hoping for an *NSYNC musical reunion, the day has finally come: The five-member boy band’s Trolls Band Together soundtrack contribution “Better Place” was announced first thing Thursday (Sept. 14) along with a new trailer for the animated threequel.

The song — which appears to follow in the upbeat footsteps of Trolls lead single “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” and Trolls World Tour opener “The Other Side” — is available to pre-save now but won’t be released until Sept. 29.

The song marks *NSYNC’s first musical release since 2002 (when the Neptunes remix of “Girlfriend,” featuring Nelly, arrived) and it comes just days after the group — Justin TimberlakeJC ChasezChris KirkpatrickJoey Fatone and Lance Bass — stepped onstage together at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards to present the award for best pop to Taylor Swift for “Anti-Hero.” The group last took the VMAs stage in 2013, for Timberlake’s Video Vanguard Award medley performance.

Rumors of *NSYNC’s reunion began swirling after a number of Trolls Band Together posters popped up in New York, featuring the first letter of the *NSYNC logo and a QR code. The code takes you to this site — TakeYouToABetterPlace.com — which teases the whistling pop tune. Timberlake stars in the upcoming film, returning as the troll Branch alongside Anna Kendrick’s Poppy, but the new movie’s plot follows as Branch reunites with his brothers to get their childhood boy band, BroZone, back together. While *NSYNC comes back together for the soundtrack, in the film, Timberlake’s bandmate brothers are voiced by Troye SivanEric AndréDaveed Diggs and Kid Cudi.

ET: See NSYNC Reunite in the Recording Studio for New Song ‘Better Place’: ‘It’s a Love Letter to Our Fans’

The new video comes after all five men reunited onstage at the 2023 MTV VMAs.

Justin Timberlake shared a new video of him casually hanging with the fellas of NSYNC and working on their first new single in decades

In a new video shared on Instagram, Timberlake gives his followers a behind-the-scenes look at his, JC Chasez, Lance Bass, Joey Fatone and Chris Kirkpatrick’s studio session working on “Better Place,” from the upcoming Trolls: Band Together soundtrack.

“When the stars align… got my brothers back together in the studio to work on something fun and the energy was special. Better Place is coming 9/29 🙏🏻 LOVE Y’ALL,” Timberlake wrote.

The video starts with a sentimental moment, led by the “Sexyback” singer as he tells his former bandmates how important the moment is.

“So many stars aligned, that’s why I hit y’all. I was like, ‘Hey, something came up.'” he says. “If we do this song, it’s a love letter to our fans. I would be honored to have the group on this song.”

“Who’s ready for a reunion?” someone asks.

The video continues with Timberlake sitting behind the sound board and reacting as each member lays down his vocals for the track. Giving the fans a taste of what’s to come, the song plays in the background.

“Sounds good, sounds like it’s finished,” Kirkpatrick says, giving the song his seal of approval.

Bass then reminds the room how long it’s been since they made music.

“That’s the first NSYNC song finished in 23 years,” he says.

Ending the video on a sweet note, Timberlake and Fatone embrace, as Fatone uses the moment to make a joke.

Bringing the emotions back, Timberlake tells his friends, “Listen, man, I love you guys That sh*t is epic.”

NSYNC has been tearin’ up their fans hearts all week with their reunion. On Wednesday, it was announced that “Better Place” will be in support of the upcoming film, Trolls: Band Together. The popular animated franchise features Timberlake as the voice of Branch.

The song is a particularly appropriate choice for the upcoming film, which revolves around the reuniting of a Troll boyband, BroZone, who come back together after years of estrangement.

Fans learned about the new song one day after Timberlake reunited with Chasez, Bass, Fatone and Kirkpatrick onstage at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards on Tuesday. The brief (yet iconic) moment was the first time the group hit the stage together since 2013, when they performed during Timberlake’s Video Vanguard performance.

“Better Place” drops Sept. 29. Trolls: Band Together hits theaters Nov. 17.

Billboard: *NSYNC’s 10 Biggest Billboard Hits

*NSYNC tore up our hearts and the Billboard charts with their hit songs, including “Bye, Bye, Bye,” “It’s Gonna Be Me” and more.

The blockbuster boy band — made up of Justin Timberlake, JC Chasez, Joey Fatone, Lance Bass and Chris Kirkpatrick — had a revolving door of hits on the Pop Airplay chart in the late 1990s and early 2000s, scoring two No. 1s on the chart in just over four years of activity. “Bye Bye Bye,” from 2000’s No Strings Attached, spent 10 weeks atop the chart in 2000, while “It’s Gonna Be Me” from the same project had five weeks at No. 1 later that year. Including their pair of No. 1s, *NSYNC scored nine top 10 hits on the Pop Airplay chart overall.

Over on the Billboard Hot 100, the quintet scored six top 10s and a lone No. 1 hit; “It’s Gonna Be Me” spent two weeks atop the list in spring 2000. Their longest-charting hit on the Hot 100 was “This I Promise You,” also from No Strings Attached, which spent 26 weeks on the chart in late 2000, peaking at No. 5.

No Strings Attached rewrote the record books when it was released in March 2000, selling a record-shattering 2.4 million copies in its first week — a feat that they held until Adele’s 25 album surpassed its week-one sales in 2015. The album also spent eight weeks atop the Billboard 200 albums chart. The group’s only other No. 1 on the albums chart is Celebrity, which spent a week atop the tally in August 2001.

Below, revisit the group’s 10 biggest hits on the Pop Airplay chart.

*NSYNC’s 10 Biggest Billboard Hits chart is based on actual performance on the weekly Pop Airplay chart, through the Sept. 9, 2023, ranking. Songs are ranked based on an inverse point system, with weeks at No. 1 earning the greatest value and weeks at No. 40 earning the least. Due to changes in chart methodology over the years, certain eras are weighted to account for different chart turnover rates over various periods.

Billboard: *NSYNC to Reunite Onstage at 2023 MTV Video Music AwardsBillboard:

It’s gonna be them. Chart-topping boy band *NSYNC is set to reunite onstage at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards on Tuesday (Sept. 12), a source confirms to Billboard.

The Grammy-nominated vocal group — which consists of Justin Timberlake, JC Chasez, Joey Fatone, Chris Kirkpatrick and Lance Bass — “will be onstage together,” the insider says.

The group has been rumored to have recorded new music for the upcoming film Trolls Band Together after posters spotted in NYC appear to tease *NSYNC’s logo. Timberlake is reprising his role as Branch in the animated movie — the third in the Trolls franchise — alongside Camila Cabello, Troye Sivan, Kid Cudi and more.

If the rumors of the new song from *NSYNC are true, it would mark the group’s first musical release together since 2002. That year, the band covered “When You Wish Upon a Star” for the Disneymania compilation album, and released the Nelly-assisted “Girlfriend” — which peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 — as the final single from their 2001 Billboard 200-topping Celebrity album, their last studio LP.

Due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, *NSYNC will not mention Trolls Band Together. Members of the labor unions are currently on strike, demanding a larger share of streaming residuals, increased job security for writers, larger writers’ rooms and a limit on the use of A.I. in screenwriting and background acting, among other negotiating points.

A reunion at the VMAs on Tuesday night would also mark 10 years since their last reunion on the awards show’s stage in 2013, for Timberlake’s Video Vanguard Award medley. In 2019, Chasez, Kirkpatrick, Fatone and Bass joined Ariana Grande onstage during her headlining Coachella set to perform “Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored” and “Tearin’ Up My Heart” without Timberlake.

A new song from *NSYNC would follow several recent releases and performances from the band members. On Monday, Sept. 10, Fatone joined forces with Bow Wow for an adorable performance of The Jackson 5’s “ABC” for the launch of Season 10 of The Masked Singer. Earlier this year, Timberlake guested on Coco Jones’ “ICU” remix and appeared alongside Timbaland and Nelly Furtado on “Keep Going Up.”

*NSYNC has earned six top 10 hits on the Hot 100, including “Bye Bye Bye” (No. 4), “This I Promise You” (No. 5) and “It’s Gonna Be Me” (No. 1, two weeks). On the Billboard 200, the boy band has notched four top 10 titles, including the No. 1 albums No Strings Attached (eight weeks) and Celebrity (one week).

*NSYNC Fans Buzzing About Possible VMAs Reunion as Members Are Spotted Around NYC

It’s tearin’ up our hearts that *NSYNC are potentially in the same city.

Fans noticed that at least three members of the group — Justin TimberlakeJoey Fatone and Lance Bass — are in New York City as of Monday (Sept. 11), the day before the MTV Video Music Awards are set to hit the Prudential Center in nearby Newark, New Jersey. Meanwhile, JC Chasez was photographed on a private plane, though there wasn’t any indication as to where he was traveling. While it’s unclear where Chris Kirkpatrick is currently, he posted a 9/11 tribute to his Instagram page on Monday featuring a photo of an NYFD fire truck in Manhattan that he seemingly took himself. At the time of publication, there is no confirmation of a reunion.

Rumors have been swirling that the band may have reunited to record new music together after a number of Trolls Band Together posters were posted in New York, featuring the first letter of the *NSYNC logo and a QR code. The code takes you to this site, which teases a whistling pop tune. Timberlake stars in the upcoming film as Branch, alongside other stars including Camila Cabello, Amy Schumer, Troye Sivan, Daveed Diggs, Kid Cudi, Zooey Deschanel, RuPaul Charles, Anderson .Paak and many more.

If the rumors are true, a new song would mark the group’s first musical release together since 2002. A reunion at the VMAs on Tuesday (Sept. 12) would also mark 10 years since their last reunion on the awards show’s stage in 2013, for Timberlake’s Video Vanguard Award medley.

In 2019, Chasez, Kirkpatrick, Fatone and Bass joined Ariana Grande onstage during her headlining Coachella set to perform “Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored” and “Tearin’ Up My Heart,” without Timberlake.

AN *NSYNC REUNION IS HAPPENING! IT’S (PROBABLY) REALLY HAPPENING!

Posters for the upcoming Trolls movie, Trolls Band Together, have popped up in New York City, and the *NSYNC logo is front and center. A QR code on the poster links to a website that also features a giant *N along with the tops of five troll heads, which could signify the five members of the group (Justin TimberlakeJC ChasezLance BassJoey Fatone, and Chris Kirkpatrick). The website’s URL also seems to tease a new song, “Take You To A Better Place.” If you hit the “play” button, a hook that features some grade-A whistling plays, which could be a snippet of the song. The third installment of the Trolls franchise, which stars Timberlake, is about a boyband reuniting, so an IRL reunion just makes sense!

Last month, a source told Entertainment Tonight that Timberlake’s former bandmates “are expected to have surprise roles” in the new movie. If *NSYNC in fact reunited for a new song, it’ll be their first since the 2001 single “Girlfriend.”

Earlier this year, Bass opened up about the possibility of a reunion. “I think it just has to be the right time; we all have to be inspired in the moment,” he said. “But I do think the world needs something again from *NSYNC. I always feel bad that there was no ending, because we didn’t have a final show, we didn’t have a final tour, because we didn’t know it was the final days.”

“We owe it to the fans to give them something at some point,” he added.
